Repairs and Restoration
When restoring antique furniture with real provenance generally, less is more. Therefore the original patina is retained and revived wherever possible. Because unnecessary work will often de-value a piece. However I often do more due to shrinkage of timber, old glues drying out, sun or water damage and general wear and tear. I can match and replace wood, blistered veneers and relay missing veneers, I always match and replaced using traditional methods and glues. I restore Modern furniture to showroom condition. From small repair jobs to complete restoration projects, I can offer exhalant services and solutions.
A full range of wood finishing services
You can be sure of a high-quality professional French Polishing service. Because of 38 years experience working with Antique and contemporary furniture.
I can remove ugly ring marks, heat marks and from table tops and cabinet tops on site. Although stripping and fully repolishing pieces is normally done in my Knebworth workshop. I use Traditional French Polishes and waxes to finish antique furniture. Returning Modern furniture to showroom condition using modern lacquers and coatings. Matt, satin and gloss finishes are available as required.
Preparation is key to ensure the quality of the final result. I always neutralise stripped surfaces and dewax existing finishes. I use water, oil and spirit stains including my own recipe stipples, to achieve colour matching. Steaming to remove indentations and scratches, bleaching where necessary. Liming for some oak furniture and colour washing as required help to achieve the perfect result.
French polishing is a wood finishing technique that results in a very high gloss surface, with a deep colour and chatoyancy. Many consider the finish to be among the most beautiful ways to finish highly figured wood.
Using a high-quality shellac, many coats are applied to your furniture. Then polishing the surface to a deep lustre. The shellac forms a hard surface on your furniture, providing more protection than ordinary polish.

Piano casework finishing requires particular care and attention to detail
Complete Piano casework restoration and repair service. Sympathetic surface restoration and Colour Matching.
I can organise Piano mechanism repair and piano tuning.
Existing finishes can be repolished to repair small areas of damage. Severely damaged, bleached or crazed finishes generally require stripping off before repolishing. Careful preparation including steaming out indented damage and re-glueing bistered veneers is essential to achieve perfect results.
I can re-ebonise previously ebonised pianos. As well as finishing mahogany, walnut or rosewood pianos to the required matching shade. A mirror-like piano finish requires a dust-free environment and countless applications of French Polish, heavier shellac mixtures or modern lacquers followed by spiriting off – there are no shortcuts.
